Book: The Alchemical Tarot Renewed by Robert Michael Place

Originally published by Thorsons in 1995, when the Alchemical Tarot went out of print, many clamored to buy both the deck and companion book--often at a steep price. In fact, the original edition still fetches hundreds of dollars with the companion book by Rosemary Ellen Guiley going for $75 or more online.

Fortunately for Tarot enthusiasts, Hermes Publications/Robert M. Place have issued an updated version of this deck called The Alchemical Tarot Renewed.

The two main differences between the original and the renewed version is that the cards no longer have the pillars flanking the imagery, making more room for the art to shine. Also, the Alchemical Tarot Renewed contains TWO versions of the Lovers card: the original, which was deemed too sexy for publication, and the cleaned up version which was included in the original deck.

When I first bought this deck, the cards were quite flexible, causing me some concern as to their durability. I'm happy to report that I've been using the Alchemical Tarot Renewed exclusively for my client readings and the card are holding up admirably--even better than decks from large publishers, in fact.

Although I found the austere images intriguing, I admit to being flummoxed with some of the alchemical symbolism in this deck. So I thought I'd put it on the shelf until a companion book became available to unlock its secrets.

The Fool and trumps in The Alchemical Tarot each relate to an alchemical process, which is part of the Great Work of alchemy that leads to the creation of the Philosopher s Stone, a mystical catalyst that transforms what it touches to its highest form. It can cure any illness, turn lead into gold, and turn an ordinary person into an enlightened sage. The Stone is represented symbolically by the World card. The four minor suits are related to the Four Elements of the alchemists: earth, air, fire, and water and in The Alchemical Tarot each of these elements is related to one of the four functions of Consciousness as listed by Jung: sensation, thinking, feeling, and intuition, respectively.

I probably would have kept them if the cardstock quality was better. If your just a collector, this would make an excellent addition. However, for daily use, wait until the price gets lowered, because you are definately going to being getting more copies to replace all the soon-to-be defected cards...

My advice to Mr Place, reissue the deck with the revised companion book, using a better card stock, and perhaps throw in a tarot bag too for the current price - then that would make it a great deal!!!

The Closing Ritual For Rune Magic

When a rite has been begun with an opening formula, a closing rite
is in order.

1. Face north or east in the elhaz STADHA and intone:

Now is done the holy work
of word and deed
Helpful to godly children
Hurtful to etin-churls
Hail to (him/her/them) who speak(s) them
Hail to (him/her/them) who grasp(s) them
Needful to (him/her/them) who know(s) them
Hail to (him/her/them) who heed(s) them.

2. At this point the hammer rite (without the rune ring) may be performed,
although this would be optional.

3. If it is not TOTALLY SAFE to allow the brazier to burn itself out,
extinguish it by placing a cover over it with the words:

Fire that glows without
forever be kindled within
by the might of Odhinn-Vili-Ve.

4. If the energy built up by the entire Operation is to be internalized, then
draw the collected energies into your personal center by standing in the cross
position, and while deeply inhaling, draw your arms in so that Your Fingertips
touch your solar plexus. Turn in all four Directions and repeat this action,
each time visualizing the sphere being drawn into your center. If the energy of
the rite has been sent abroad, then you may simply split the sphere with your
hand or knife and step out of the circle.

With this book you won't get just another Tarot book with pages and pages of card Interpretations and just a few inadequate pages of instructions on how to conduct a reading. This book is basically concerned with the how, whys, and wherefores of conducting readings. It was created from real questions from real people looking for practical advice on dealing with the cards. This is one of the best references that any person interested in Tarot, from the seasoned reader to the neophyte, could invest their money in. The work not only stands alone as a great reference, but would work Together With many works on Tarot that have great card interpretations but little practical information on how to conduct a reading.

I've read this book several times and have incorporated in my own readings much of its advice. I've been privileged to be able to attend Wald and Ruth Ann's Monday evening classes in their NYC Tarot School and have obtained a degree from them. I now count them among my close friends and am working toward a second degree. For me this book was a great adjunct to these classes and a great reminder of much of what I had learned from them. However, as with any class, you can only cover just so much and this book is packed with more information than any class on Tarot could fit in.

Tarot Tips is a compendium of sage advice and practical Tarot wisdom from two respected teachers with decades of Tarot experience. What is palmistry?
Palmistry is a method of counseling that originated in India over 3,000 years
ago. It is a part of a vast field of study, referred to as Samudrik Shastra,

Is palmistry fortune-telling?
In a word: no. The original intent of palmistry was for personality assessment

Can you make predictions through palmistry?
You cannot make predictions with palmistry. However, since there is a definite

How does palmistry work?
Palmistry is best seen as a dynamic process. The lines of the hand are not
carved in stone. Since the lines of the hand reflect our thinking, as our

Which hand do you read?
It is important to look at both hands during a reading. Depending on which hand

Palmistry, also chiromancy (Greek cheir, "hand"; manteia, "divination"), art of
characterization and foretelling the future through the study of the palm. It
was known among the Chaldeans, Assyrians, Egyptians, and Hebrews and was
recognized by such philosophers as Plato and Aristotle. Widely accepted
during the Middle Ages, it was revived during the 19th century, especially in
France. Since the turn of the century it has been regarded as a branch of
fortune-telling.

Palmistry is chiefly concerned with the mounts of the palm, the lines on the
mounts, and the lines interlacing the palm. The left hand supposedly reflects
inbred and the right hand acquired characteristics. Each mount signifies a
certain personality trait. The mount of Jupiter denotes honor and a happy
disposition; of Saturn, prudence and therefore success; of Apollo, appreciation
of beauty; of Mercury, scientific, industrial, and commercial interests; of
Mars, courage; of the Moon, a dreamy disposition; and of Venus, an amorous
nature. The four most important lines represent life, intelligence, the heart or
sensation, and personal fortune. Other markings of the palm corroborate or
modify by their positions the deductions made from the mounts and lines.

This little book has been written in the spirit of Suggestive Inquiry, and the writing of it has led to many illuminating ideas in regard to the Universal Tradition as disclosed by the Tarot Trumps. This book is a follow-up to Achad's book Q.B.L. or the Bride's Reception. Contents: Light on the Egyptian Revival; Essence of the Practical Qabalah; More Light on the Tarot Trumps; The Sun, the Devil, and the Redeemer; The Mystery of Babylon and the Beast; Further Light on the Tree of Life; The Law of Thelema (will); The Tradition of the Golden Age; All of Achad's books are a must for the student of Tarot and Qabalah.

Frater Achad (Charles Stansfeld Jones) goes into the meaning of the tarot cards very deeply here. If you are interested in the Correspondences between the tarot trumps and the "paths" on the Tree of Life, this is essential reading. And if you feel like something is "wrong" with the conventional attributions, you will find much food for thought here.

For instance, the conventional scheme has the "Fool" starting at the top of the Path. But why would the order of the paths go down the Tree of
Life instead of up? Many people think this must be backwards. Otherwise the Path of Enlightenment would be leading downward from Heaven to the material world of Malkut.

In "The Egyptian Revival", Achad presents an interesting argument in favor of another arrangement. I'm not sure that he gets it exactly right, but some of his placements seem infinitely more meaningful than the existing positions. At least his paths start in the material world and lead in the direction of Kether, rather than the other way around. His attitude is very humble in making these suggestions, and he goes out of his way to praise some of those in the world of established commercial magick who disagreed with his ideas.

Of course, the same correspondences that cause the tarot to be ordered the way it is, also exist in the dogma and ritual of scores or hundreds of secret orders and organisations. So Achad anticipated opposition. He was very careful to pose his ideas as merely the suggestions of an
humble truthseeker. I think he was like many good and innocent people who assume other people to be good and free from malice in an
Intellectual discussion.
